What is Pilates?
Pilates matwork is a targeted form of exercise, increasingly endorsed by GPs, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths & Chiropractors. It is a favourite of professional dancers, horse-riders and other sports people when they are recovering from injury or working to build muscle tone and core strength. Developed in the early part of the last century (Pilates is about 90 years old) by Joseph Pilates, this system of exercise has grown in popularity as it has proven its effectiveness in the worlds of professional sports and dance. Originally used by Mr. Pilates to maintain the health of internees during the 2nd world war, it was quickly embraced by the New York dance community and since then has become the complementary workout of choice for sports people, professional horse riders and those wishing to gain core strength and improved flexibility of the spine. Pilates works on building core strength or strength from the inside out. Complex muscles close to the spine and at the centre of the muscular system enable us to maintain good posture and back health. Pilates enables us to access this powerful centre easily without engaging unnecessary muscle groups or simply missing out on core strengthening as many other forms of exercise, even extreme and challenging forms of exercise may do. Pilates is about quality, not quantity of movement! How Pilates May Help You:
Conditions Which Can Be Alleviated:
My Experience With Pilates I discovered Pilates as a result of suffering for five long years with chronic low back pain. Since then I have qualified as a Yoga Teacher, Pilates Instructor, TCM Acupuncturist, Neuromuscular Therapist and Orthopaedic Sports Massage Therapist. I have been practicing Pilates for more than ten years and have been teaching it professionally to chronic back pain sufferers as well as the general public since 2011. I work regularly with Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and other health professionals to help people resolve a wide variety of back pain and other health issues. As a result of my personal experience and professional training I understand back pain from the inside out and would love to talk to you about how Pilates classes or targeted 1-2-1 sessions might help to restore you to full health.
