Yoga - The Original Holistic WorkoutRefined by thousands of years of practice and recommended by GPs, Yoga is a simple form of exercise, available to all and will make you feel relaxed, content, alert and energized. This form of exercise dates back several thousand years and continues to evolve and grow today. Originally practiced by religous ascetics to gain spiritual insight, it is now widely practiced by the general public for health, well-being and as a physical therapy. Once seen as exotic and unusual, as recently as 20 years ago, it has become increasingly mainstream although it is still often seen as a mainly gentle form of exercise practiced mostly by middle-class women and seniors. One could also say that these are the two populations that have truly pioneered its growth and popularity in the west. Gradually, however this view of yoga is also changing and more and more people from all walks of life are experiencing its amazing benefits. The truth is that yoga can be of benefit to anyone and to everyone. Given that this human tradition is so old, the variety of forms of yoga is today so vast that there are forms of the practice suitable for everyone from small children to retirees, from the superfit to the unwell and of course it is equally suitable for men and women alike. It can be practiced competitively or therapeutically, with spiritual or entirely physical goals in mind. Although yoga classes vary immensly in their content, you can expect in any class that you will be stretched, strengthened, that you will be made more aware of your breath and that at some point you will be upside down or asked to balance on one foot or the other. Few forms of exercise include this wide variety of activities and this is partly what makes yoga, in all of its forms, absolutely unique. I teach three style of yoga. Hatha, Ashtanga and Viniyoga. All are equally yoga and each can be done by anyone, modifying according to need and taste. Hatha will emphasize a more relaxed stretching style. Ashtanga style is based upon the Ashtanga sequence of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and emphasizes strength as much as flexibility and learning a sequence that can be practiced routinely at home. By Viniyoga I refer to restorative yoga created for the individual, usually as remedial work for private one-to-one clients.
